Spring 2019 Application Deadline:  11:59 p.m. PST, Friday, May 3, 2019

Eligibility: UCSC graduate students in good academic standing in the Social Sciences, Humanities, or Arts.

The Lionel Cantú Memorial Award celebrates the life and work of Lionel Cantú (1965-2002), former Assistant Professor of Sociology at UC Santa Cruz. Professor Cantú's scholarship bridged and advanced Latino sociology, immigration studies, transnational/cross-border studies, gender and sexuality studies, and the study of gay men and masculinity. UC Santa Cruz graduate students working in any of these areas are eligible to apply, although preference will go to those working in and linking more than one area.  Recipients may use the award to pay for travel for research or to present work at a professional meeting; books, software packages, and supplies; and miscellaneous services, such as manuscript preparation, translation, transcription, and video documentation. This year's award(s) will be between $600 – $700.

1) Since the Lionel Cantú Memorial Award is co-administered by the RCA and the Sociology and Latin American and Latino Studies Departments, all three of these units shall be acknowledged in proposals to other campus units and in publications and/or conference materials that result, fully or partially, from the award.
2) Funds must be used before June 20, 2020.
3) A brief narrative and financial report is due by June 20, 2020.
4) A brief 3-5 minute video explaining research conducted and/or opportunities provided through this grant. May be used on RCA social media and/or newsletters.
5) Awardees should expect to be invited to present their research findings at a RCA event in the near future.
